Episode 15 - The Networking Long Game
Hi. I'm Keith, and welcome to Networking Nuggets. Let's talk about one of the least exciting words in networking: patience. Because networking has a timing problem people often expect immediate results. They attend an event, meet some people, then wonder why hasn't anything happened yet?
Keith:But networking isn't Amazon Prime. Relationships don't arrive next day. When someone refers you, recommends you or introduces you they're putting their reputation on the line too. So that takes trust and trust takes time. Other than the good Networking Nuggets Networking much more like farming than hunting.
Keith:You plant seeds. You water them. You nurture them. Then eventually something grows. Some of the best opportunities I've ever received came from people I'd known for months or maybe even years not from those people I only met at a meeting yesterday.
Keith:The people who get the best networking results aren't always the most charismatic. They're almost always the most consistent. They attend regularly. They always follow-up. They stay visible.
Keith:They put effort into keeping their relationships alive. Do all that and over time something interesting happens. People begin to remember you to trust you to think of you. So instead of asking what did I get from that event? Try asking what relationship did I strengthen?
Keith:Every conversation is a seed. Not every seed grows immediately but enough of them do. Networking isn't about instant results. It's about building a future network that will support opportunities that you can't even see yet.
