Episode 16 - Why Being Visible Isn't the Same as Being Pushy

Keith:

Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Networking Nuggets. Let's start with something that makes a lot of people uncomfortable. Visibility. Just hearing that word makes some people think

Intro:

I don't want to look like I'm showing off

Keith:

or I don't want people thinking I'm constantly promoting myself and honestly I understand that. I think one of the biggest misconceptions about networking is that being visible means constantly selling yourself. Posting every five minutes. Talking about your business in every conversation. Always being on.

Keith:

But that's not visibility that's broadcasting. Visibility is much simpler than that. It's simply helping people remember you. Because here's the reality people can't recommend someone they've forgotten. Have you ever had someone say to you I was talking to somebody last week and they suddenly remembered you would have been perfect.

Keith:

That happens because something brought you back into their mind. Not because you shouted the loudest because you stayed visible. Now visibility means different things to different people but for me it might be commenting thoughtfully on LinkedIn, sending a follow-up message, attending networking groups regularly, sharing something you've learned, congratulating someone on success. Because none of those things feel pushy but they're simply reminders that you're there. A lot of people disappear for six months then suddenly appear with a post saying here's my new business.

Keith:

The problem is relationships don't work like that. Visibility works best when it's steady not frantic. People don't build trust because they saw one brilliant post. Trust grows because they keep seeing you. They keep hearing from you.

Keith:

They keep recognising your values. So a practical challenge for you. This week ask yourself what's one small thing I could do to stay visible? Not to sell. Just to stay connected.

Keith:

Because visibility isn't about demanding attention. It's about making it easier for people to remember you. And why is that important? Because opportunities often come from people who simply remembered your name at exactly the right moment.
