Episode 2 - Why Networking Doesn’t Lead to Anything (The Real Reason)
Hi. I'm Keith and welcome to Networking Nuggets. Let me paint a picture that might feel very familiar. You've just been to a networking event or maybe you've just come from a networking Zoom session. You've had a few good conversations.
Keith:Maybe even one or two that felt really promising. You know, the kind where you walk away thinking that was a good one. Well, we should definitely talk again. You might even have said it out loud. Hey, let's stay in touch.
Keith:Or we should grab a coffee sometime soon. And in that moment, you mean it. But then life happens. You get busy. Other things come up.
Keith:And before you know it nothing happens. And this is where most networking quietly falls apart. Not in the room, not in the conversation, but after it. Because that initial interaction, you know, that's just the starting point. It's the introduction.
Keith:It's the movie trailer. What happens next is what determines whether anything comes from it. And for most people, that step never happens. Not because they don't care but because of things like, I'll do that later Or I don't know. I don't want to seem pushy.
Keith:Or I'm not sure what to say. So it gets delayed and delayed again. And then the extradonton. And the frustrating thing is that opportunity you felt in the moment, it was real. But without follow-up, it fades because people are busy.
Keith:They meet lots of people. They forget conversations. Not intentionally, just naturally. So if you don't follow-up, you're relying on memory. And believe me, memory isn't a strategy.
Keith:So let's simplify this. Good follow-up doesn't need to be clever. Doesn't need to be long. It just needs to be timely. It needs to be personal.
Keith:And most importantly, it needs to be easy to respond to. So something like, hi, Sarah. Great to meet you yesterday. Really enjoyed our chat about whatever. Fancy grabbing a coffee next week.
Keith:That's it. No overthinking. No long messages. Just simple human communication. And timing matters more than people realize.
Keith:The sweet spot the sweet spot is twenty four to forty eight hours while the conversation is still fresh, while they still remember you. Leave it a week and you're starting again. So if you want better results from networking, don't just focus on having better conversations. Focus on what happens after them because that's where the value is built. Networking doesn't fail in the room.
Keith:It fails in the silence afterwards. So don't leave it there. Follow-up. If you found this week's episode useful, make sure you follow or subscribe. And if you want more, check out Networking Nuggets on LinkedIn.
Keith:It's my weekly newsletter where I share deeper insights every Wednesday. Until next time keep connecting. Networking Nuggets is a Think of Something Publishing production.
